Congratulations on your incredible weight loss journey! Reaching your weight goal is a testament to your dedication, hard work, and the strength of your spirit. It's a monumental achievement, and now it's time to celebrate by focusing on how you feel in your new body.
After significant weight loss, many find themselves with excess skin, which can be both a physical and emotional challenge. Here's how we can address these changes through body contouring surgery:
This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen, and tightens the muscles to create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile. It can also address diastasis recti, a common condition after either carrying significant intra-abdominal weight or pregnancy, where the abdominal muscles separate. In some cases, an abdominoplasty can be performed in addition to a panniculectomy. A panniculectomy is the term for removal of only the overlaying abdominal pannus, and does not include tightening the abdominal muscles or relocating the belly button. Some insurance companies will cover a panniculectomy based on if you meet certain criteria (extent of pannus overhang, chronic rashes/fungal infections beneath the pannus, etc.). A panniculectomy can be performed either at the same time as an abdominoplasty, or first as a separate procedure if you’re still progressing with your weight loss but the abdominal skin is holding you back.
Often combined or staged with abdominoplasty, this surgery excises excess skin and tissue from the lower back, shaping the entire torso to improve overall body contour. The scar line for a torso lift can either be straight across, hidden in the underwear line, or curved gently upwards, which helps excise extra flank tissue.
Sagging breasts after weight loss can be rejuvenated with a lift, which is a a common surgery after weight loss. Dr. Carpenter also employs an auto-augmentation technique, where excess lateral chest wall tissue (the lateral 'breast roll') is repositioned to enhance volume and lift without using implants, offering a natural look with your own tissue.
This surgery removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms. Dr. Carpenter uses a medial scar pattern, such that the scar is not visible when your arms are resting at your sides. The incision for brachioplasties can be brought across your axilla (armpit), which allows for excess lateral chest wall tissue to be reduced in the same operation.
Focuses on removing excess skin in the upper back. If you have extra rolls in the upper back region, those rolls unfortunately cannot be addressed with a lower back lift alone. The scar for an upper back lift can either be positioned horizontally, to hide in the bra line, or at a ‘Christmas tree’ angle slanting downwards - the best position for this scar will depend upon your anatomy and the extend of tissue needing to be removed. An upper back lift can often be combined with either a breast lift or brachioplasty for comprehensive upper body contouring.
Reduces sagging skin on the thighs, improving both appearance and comfort in movement.
Weight loss can lead to facial deflation, accelerating signs of aging. A facelift or neck lift, combined with fat grafting, can remove excess skin, tighten the facial fascial layer, and restore youthful volume to key facial areas.
The optimal time for surgery is after you've maintained your goal weight for 8-12 months, ensuring that your weight is stable. However, if excess skin causes discomfort, hygiene issues, or even medical problems like rashes or chronic infections, earlier intervention might be necessary. Before surgery, Dr. Carpenter will coordinate with your primary care physician to ensure your nutritional status is ready for surgery (some types of weight loss surgeries can lead to specific nutritional deficiencies, which can be addressed before skin reduction surgery).
Post-weight loss, multiple procedures might be necessary to achieve your desired contour. Combining surgeries can be efficient, reducing recovery time and potentially costs. The combination depends on:
