Understanding Upper Blepharoplasty: Refreshing Your Gaze

Upper blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid lift, is a procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the upper eyelids. This surgery removes excess skin, muscle, and fat that can make your eyes look tired, feel heavy, and obstruct your vision.

What Does Upper Blepharoplasty Involve?

This procedure involves:

  • Skin Removal: Excess skin from the upper eyelids is carefully excised, which can help alleviate the drooping that can obscure your vision or give your eyes a hooded appearance. This scar is hidden in your natural upper eyelid crease.
  • Muscle Adjustment: Sometimes, part of the orbicularis oculi muscle is trimmed to reduce bulk or to contour the eyelid more effectively.
  • Fat Resection: There's a compartment of fat in the upper eyelid known as the medial fat compartment. As we age, this fat can become more prominent, causing a bulge just lateral to your nose. During blepharoplasty, fat from this area can be removed to smooth out the eyelid contour.

The Surgical Approach

  • Incision Placement: The incision for an upper blepharoplasty is strategically placed within the natural crease of your upper eyelid. This placement ensures that the scar is well-hidden, blending seamlessly as it heals.

Recovery and Expectations

After your upper blepharoplasty:

  • Initial Recovery: You might experience some swelling and bruising, which is normal and will subside over time. Applying cold compresses hourly for2 days after the procedures helps reduce these symptoms.
  • Activity: Limit your physical activities for the first week or so, avoiding any strenuous exercise or activities that could strain your eyes or increase blood pressure.
  • Sutures: You will have sutures along the incision line, which typically remain in place for about one week, allowing for optimal healing and minimal scarring.

Form and Function

Upper blepharoplasty not only improves the appearance of your eyes but can also enhance your field of vision if your eyelids have been impairing it. Sometimes insurance will cover part of an upper blepharoplasty procedure if your visual field is obstructed, which would require a visual field test. Ask your insurance carrier if blepharoplasty for vision is a covered benefit for you.
